Joule Heating

Equation
P = I²·R
Field
Circuits
Named After
James Prescott Joule
Symbols
P power dissipated as heat · I current · R resistance · equivalently P = V·I
Year
1841

Significance

Current forcing its way through resistance sheds energy as heat — toasters, fuses, and incandescent filaments on purpose; warm laptops and power-line losses by accident. The I² is why the grid transmits at high voltage and low current.
