Peltier Effect

Thermoelectrics · 1834

Equation
Q̇ = Π·I
Field
Thermoelectrics
Named After
Jean Charles Athanase Peltier
Year
1834

Symbols

Q̇ heat absorbed or released at a junction of two materials · I electric current through it · Π the Peltier coefficient, tied to Seebeck's by Π = S·T

Significance

Run the Seebeck effect backwards: push current through a junction and it pumps heat from one side to the other — a solid-state refrigerator. Camping coolers, CPU chillers, and laser stabilizers all run on this thirteen-years-later mirror image.
