Torricelli's Law

Fluid Dynamics · 1643

Equation
v = √(2 g h)
Field
Fluid Dynamics
Named After
Evangelista Torricelli
Symbols
v the speed of a jet leaving an opening · g gravitational acceleration · h the height of fluid surface above the opening
Year
1643

Significance

Fluid escapes a hole at the speed a stone would reach falling the same height — Torricelli's 1643 result, a century before Bernoulli explained it as energy conservation. It sets the jet speed of a Pelton wheel from its head, the pour rate through a casting sprue, and how long a tank takes to drain.
