Significance

Motion under a steady push, from a dropped stone to a car braking. Galileo got them from a ball rolling down an incline in 1638; the Merton scholars had the mean-speed rule three centuries earlier. Each is the fundamental theorem of calculus applied once or twice to a constant, and they fail the moment the acceleration is not constant — for that you need F = ma and a differential equation.
