Reaction Isotherm

Chemical Thermodynamics · 1884

Equation
ΔG° = −RT·ln K
Field
Chemical Thermodynamics
Named After
Jacobus van 't Hoff
Year
1884

Symbols

ΔG° standard free-energy change · R gas constant · T absolute temperature · K the equilibrium constant: products over reactants when the reaction has run its course

Significance

How far a reaction goes, from how much energy it releases — thermodynamics and equilibrium welded into one line. A modest ΔG° of −40 kJ/mol already means K of ten million; the logarithm is why reactions tend to go nearly to completion or barely at all.
