Van 't Hoff Equation

Chemical Thermodynamics · 1884

Equation
d(ln K)/dT = ΔH° / (RT²)
Field
Chemical Thermodynamics
Named After
Jacobus van 't Hoff
Year
1884

Symbols

K equilibrium constant · T absolute temperature · ΔH° standard enthalpy of reaction · R gas constant · heat-releasing reactions (ΔH° < 0) lose ground as T rises

Significance

Heat a reaction that gives off heat and equilibrium retreats; heat one that absorbs heat and it advances — Le Chatelier's principle made quantitative. It's why the Haber process runs hot for speed but not too hot for yield, feeding half the world's nitrogen. First chemistry Nobel, 1901.
