Qubit State

Quantum Computing · 1995

Equation
|ψ⟩ = α|0⟩ + β|1⟩, |α|² + |β|² = 1
Field
Quantum Computing
Named After
Benjamin Schumacher (coined 'qubit')
Symbols
|0⟩, |1⟩ the two classical answers · α, β complex amplitudes weighting each · measurement yields 0 with probability |α|², 1 with |β|²
Year
1995

Significance

A bit that holds both answers at once, in precise proportions, until measured — the unit of quantum information. n qubits span 2ⁿ amplitudes simultaneously, which is the entire bet behind quantum computing; Schumacher named it while proving quantum states can be compressed, Shannon-style.
