Eyring Equation

Chemical Kinetics · 1935

Equation
k = (k_B·T/h)·e^(−ΔG‡/RT)
Field
Chemical Kinetics
Named After
Henry Eyring
Year
1935

Symbols

k rate constant · k_B Boltzmann constant · h Planck constant · ΔG‡ free energy of the transition state, the fleeting halfway arrangement · R gas constant · T temperature

Significance

Arrhenius's barrier given a physical face: reactions pass through a transition state, and quantum mechanics (there's Planck's h) sets the universal attempt frequency k_BT/h — about six trillion tries per second at room temperature.
