extraction

Cassiterite is dense and chemically stubborn, so it survives weathering into placers — most Asian tin is dredged from river beds and shallow seas and concentrated by gravity. Hard-rock ore is ground and gravity-separated the same way. The concentrate is smelted with carbon in a reverberatory or electric furnace and refined.
