extraction
Bastnäsite is floated, then cracked open by roasting with sulfuric acid or caustic soda and leached. The mixed rare-earth solution goes through hundreds of counter-current solvent-extraction stages to separate elements whose chemistry differs by almost nothing. Cerium, the most abundant, drops out early by oxidation. Ionic clays in southern China are leached in place with ammonium sulfate.
