Young's Modulus

Materials Science · 1807

Equation
E = σ/ε
Field
Materials Science
Named After
Thomas Young
Symbols
σ stress (force per unit area) · ε strain (fractional stretch) · E the stiffness of the material itself, independent of the object's shape
Year
1807

Significance

Hooke's law made a property of matter rather than of a particular spring — rubber's E is measured in megapascals, steel's in hundreds of gigapascals, diamond's beyond a terapascal. The number engineers reach for first when choosing what to build with.
