Transformer Equation

Electromagnetism · 1885

Equation
V_s/V_p = N_s/N_p
Field
Electromagnetism
Symbols
V_p, V_s primary and secondary voltage · N_p, N_s turns on each winding
Year
1885

Significance

Two coils on one iron core, and the voltage steps by the ratio of their turns — with almost nothing lost, which is why alternating current won: step up to hundreds of kilovolts, send it across a country with small losses, step down at the other end. Faraday's law made practical.
