Pascal's Principle

Equation
Δp is the same everywhere in a confined fluid ⇒ F₂/F₁ = A₂/A₁
Field
Fluid Dynamics
Named After
Blaise Pascal
Symbols
Δp a change in pressure applied to an enclosed fluid · F₁, F₂ the forces on two pistons · A₁, A₂ their areas
Year
1653

Significance

Push on a confined fluid anywhere and the pressure rises everywhere by the same amount — so a small force on a small piston becomes a large force on a large one. Every hydraulic jack, brake and excavator arm is this. It trades force for distance like a lever, and the work is the same at both ends.
