Equation
F = q(E + v × B)
Field
Electromagnetism
Named After
Hendrik Lorentz
Symbols
F force on the charge · q charge · E electric field · v velocity · B magnetic field
Year
1895

Significance

The force that turns every electric motor: current in a wire is moving charge, a magnetic field pushes it sideways, and a loop of it in a field turns. Run in reverse — move the wire — and the same force pushes charge along it, which is the generator. One equation, both directions.
