Klein–Gordon Equation

Quantum Field Theory · 1926

Equation
(□ + (mc/ℏ)²)φ = 0
Field
Quantum Field Theory
Named After
Oskar Klein · Walter Gordon
Year
1926

Symbols

φ a scalar field · □ the d'Alembertian, ∂²/c²∂t² − ∇² (the wave operator of spacetime) · m the field quantum's mass · ℏ, c the usual constants

Significance

The first relativistic quantum equation — the wave equation and E = mc² fused into one. Set aside when it seemed to misbehave for electrons (Dirac fixed that), it returned as the equation every spinless field obeys, the Higgs included.
