Hydraulic Power

Fluid Dynamics

Equation
P = ρ g Q h
Field
Fluid Dynamics
Symbols
P power available · ρ water density · g gravitational acceleration · Q volume flow rate · h head: the height the water falls

Significance

Head times flow times the weight of water — the power a hydro site can give before turbine and generator losses take their share. A hundred metres of head and a cubic metre a second is about a megawatt. It is potential energy per second, and every dam, mill race and micro-hydro scheme is designed on it.
