Gauss's Law for Magnetism
Electromagnetism · 1835
- Equation
- ∇·B = 0
- Field
- Electromagnetism
- Named After
- Carl Friedrich Gauss
- Symbols
- B magnetic field · ∇· divergence (net outflow from a point)
- Year
- 1835
Significance
Magnetic field lines never start or end — there are no magnetic monopoles. Cut a magnet in half and you get two magnets, never a lone north pole. Second of Maxwell's four equations.
