Significance

Rates multiply through a chain of dependence: if pressure depends on depth and depth on time, the rate of pressure change is the product of the two rates. It is what turns dv/dt into v dv/dx (the origin of ½mv²), lets the heat equation be solved by substitution, and makes every physical derivative computable rather than merely defined.
