Bohr Model Energy Levels

Equation
Eₙ = −13.6 eV / n²
Field
Atomic Physics
Named After
Niels Bohr
Year
1913

Symbols

Eₙ energy of the electron in the nth orbit · n = 1, 2, 3, … the principal quantum number · 13.6 eV the ionization energy of hydrogen; the differences give Rydberg's lines exactly

Significance

Electrons may only occupy certain orbits, and jumping between them emits light of the difference in energy — Bohr's rule reproduced Rydberg's formula and predicted R_H from h, e, and mₑ alone. Wrong in its details, right in its spirit, and the bridge from Planck's quantum to Schrödinger's atom; the periodic table's shell structure follows from n.
