BCS Energy Gap

Superconductivity · 1957

Equation
Δ(0) ≈ 1.76·k_B·T_c
Field
Superconductivity
Named After
John Bardeen · Leon Cooper · Robert Schrieffer
Symbols
Δ the energy gap protecting the superconducting state · k_B Boltzmann constant · T_c the critical temperature where superconductivity dies
Year
1957

Significance

The mechanism, 46 years after the discovery: electrons pair up (Cooper pairs), glued by lattice vibrations, and condense into one collective quantum state protected by this gap — too costly for stray collisions to break, so current flows forever. Bardeen's second Nobel.
