extraction
Reefs a metre thick are followed underground for kilometres. Ore is floated to a concentrate, smelted to matte, and the base metals leached away in a base-metal refinery; the precious-metal concentrate then goes through a long chain of dissolution, solvent extraction and precipitation that separates platinum from palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium and osmium — months, end to end.
