extraction
Most of the world's magnesium metal comes from China by the Pidgeon process: calcined dolomite and ferrosilicon heated under vacuum at 1200 °C, the magnesium distilling off and condensing. The alternative is electrolysis of magnesium chloride from brine or seawater — the Dead Sea route.
