extraction
Almost never mined on its own. Most comes from the Central African Copperbelt as a co-product of copper — leached, solvent-extracted and shipped as cobalt hydroxide, largely to China for refining. The rest is a by-product of nickel, from both sulfide smelting and laterite HPAL.
